Safe there in its tangled heart

I watch the swelling buds on the lilac bush outside my window. Dappled with sunlight, the tiny birds play amongst its intricate branches. Safe there in its tangled heart, they are shielded from the swift dart of the hungry sparrowhawk as he looks for lunch.
