Last Night As Darkness Fell

Last night as darkness fell it creeped in through the big window in my room. Oozing across every surface, it filled the air. Every particle was dark and it entered me, riding my breath, covering my skin, it seeped into every pore. I sat motionless, holding the night inside me.

I didn't know who Jane Kenyon was so just looked her up and have been reading some of her poetry - thanks for introducing me to her Suz. :-)

Read "Having it out with melancholy"
it was the first poem of hers that I ever read....my heart nearly broke reading the first verses..so touched by her description of this oppresseive condition
From the nursery
"When I was born, you waited
behind a pile of linen in the nursery,
and when we were alone, you lay down
on top of me, pressing
the bile of desolation into every pore."
Jane was bipolar and suffered depression most of her life
she died of leukemia about 10 years ago...I just love her poetry

Wow Suz, I just read that, amazingly descriptive but so, so poignant. . . what a weight she had to carry.

I love this post and also the wonderful quote by Willie Tyler. Where do you find so many great quotes? Just from your reading I suppose. I am also inspired to read some poems by Jane Kenyon, who I have never read. It's wonderful that our suffering can blossom into beautiful expressions of poetry, like the lotus flower that emerges from rich mud into such luminous purity. This sounds like what Jane Kenyon's poetry does. We all have suffering, why not recycle and transform it into compassion and art?

Susannah to me your post about the holding the night inside you has a joyous quality. There is infinite beauty in the darkness of night "riding my breath, covering my skin, it seeped into every pore. I sat motionless, holding the night inside me." There's softness and mystery in this wonderful darkness that you experienced deeply and then shared with us through your words. Thank you.

Hi Colleen, I guess you could say I collect quotes :-) They jump out at me, and if they speak to me I keep them, I hoard those precious snippets of meaning, that can encapsulate so much, in so few words.

I am glad you sensed the joy and beauty in my experience and my words. Softness and mystery, ah, wonderful. Thanks very much for your comment Colleen.
